Unfortunately there will only be one summer program at Back of the Yards. “For sure, as of right now there will be one summer program and that is ComEd’s Youth Ambassadors.” says Mr. Ortiz, the College and Career Coach at Back of the Yards.
Due to budget cuts, there will only be one out of a planned eight summer programs.
“Unfortunately there have been a few budget cuts that have hindered our ability to have security available. That’s one of our main setbacks right now.” says Mr. Ortiz
The school even lacks a budget for Freshman Connection this year; meaning incoming freshman miss out at a summer in the classroom at Back of the Yards. “With the whole budget crisis, we’re not sure if Freshman Connection will continue this summer. It’s in the air, we’re not sure yet.” continues Mr. Ortiz.
Although there is a lack of summer programs and it is to late to apply to ComEd’s Youth Ambassadors, there is still one other way to spend your summer here at Back of the Yards. There will be summer camps for every school sport. They are open to every Back of the Yards student, including incoming freshmen.
The current situation is not going to stop Mr. Ortiz from bringing more programs next summer to Back of the Yards. “My goal is to definitely try to somehow make sure that there’s, in next year’s budget, funds available for security; whether it is fundraising or something else.” explains Mr.Ortiz.
Mr. Ortiz regrets to inform us of this news as he worked very hard to try to bring more summer programs this year. “ I was trying my best to bring a few more After School Matters programs, a few other programs..” says Mr. Ortiz
However you decide to spend your summer, whether it’s at the school or with your family, make sure you stay safe and have fun. Have a great summer Back of the Yards!
