BOYCP has officially had its first girls’ water polo team. With hardwork and dedication from the team as a whole, spectacular things were accomplished. To start off, the girls ended their 2015-2016 season with 6 wins and 5 losses. Not only did they get a good record for their first year as a team, but they also got 3rd place in the Little Village annual water polo tournament. The girls achieved amazing things however, the road to success wasn’t always clear.

Due to the fact that this was the first year with a BOYCP water polo team, many girls questioned their actual strength and their ability to perform in the water. For most of the girls this was their first time being on a water polo team, but that didn’t stop them from putting in all of the effort needed to win their games.

However, many of the team members like Esmeralda Fernandez, a junior here at BOYCP, received a lot of support from both her peers and her coach to help her overcome challenges. Esmeralda stated, “I wasn’t a good swimmer and haven’t had much experience in the pool, therefore when I saw everyone else swimming faster than me and being at the other side quicker than me I felt bad. It made me feel like I didn’t belong, but I managed to overcome this with the voice of my coach and best friend. [They] both motivated me throughout the season. They pushed me to do my best, and told me I would get better. And I do feel like I improved.”

It is clearly visible that the special friendship between the girls was responsible for the consistent encouragement at each and every game.

This amazing season has made a numerous amount of people eager to see what the next season of girls’ water polo has brings.
