On Tuesday, November 8, we witnessed the 2016 US Presidential Election take place. Hillary’s victory was believed to be a landslide, however, as the day came to an end, the polls resulted in a victory for Donald Trump. The controversial outcome left many wondering what is to come once he enters office.
The progression of his campaign proved to be pivotal towards a shift in the way politics are managed. The importance of voting seemed to have grown tremendously this election year, as it was emphasized thoroughly to vote against hate. Many came to the spotlight to increase awareness of the importance in voting for this year’s election.
When Trump takes up residency in the White House, Republicans will also have control of the House and Senate. The inauguration is scheduled for January 20, 2017, but violent protests have already erupted across the country. The many racial slurs spoken on behalf of Trump throughout his campaign sparked a dislike in the once beloved millionaire.
Promises of building a stronger border in Mexico, while casting out immigrants, has culminated a majority of Trump-minded followers bowing to his ideals. With all this in mind, many are left in a position of hating their President-elect. Many Americans are violently acting out in protests against Trump. However, we must put aside our differences and give Trump a chance in office. With many claiming that Trump is “not my president”, there are many families who fear being split apart. Many who fear what is to come.
As a community, we need to stand united in order for our students to stop fearing the unknown. It is true that we do not know what the future holds. At the same time, we do not know what great things can happen. Together, as a community of people who will continue to celebrate the smallest of accomplishments as we break bread and share in each others’ lives.
Trump is now steering the ship that is America, and we can’t wish for him to sink our boat. For us to wish Trump failure, is to wish this country failure. We need to rise up, because like the stocks, they plummeted, but got back on their feet.
