Jeff Sessions, born on December 24, 1946, as Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III is the Junior United States Senator from Alabama and a member of the Republican party. Mr. Sessions was originally considered a possible nominee for Vice President but president Donald Trump ultimately selected Mr. Sessions to be the Attorney General. According to the United States Department of Justice, the Attorney General has the responsibility to supervise and direct the administration and operation of the Department of Justice. This includes the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Bureau of Prisons, Office of Justice Programs, and the U.S. Attorneys and U.S. Marshals Service. According to motherjones and “one the issues” here are some major issues and that Mr. Sessions may hold:
- Women’s rights: Mr. Sessions voted on having pregnant women removed from the State Children’s Health Insurance Program also known as SCHIP, and instead wanted to give coverage to the fetus. Rather than to the women who have to bear the child.
- Child care: Mr. Sessions voted no on expanding the state children’s insurance program from 2 million children to 4 million.
- Elderly Rights: Mr. Sessions also opposes expanding Medicare and Medicaid to the low-income people. He supports the budget cuts for Medicare and wants to limit the enrollment to the Medicare part D which is about the access to prescription drugs and their cost.
Mr. Sessions has a strong consistent Republican view of what the future should look like for the American people. Mr. Sessions, as well as our President, are strongly guiding their government into a variety of new strategies and there will be some differences of opinion with the other side, as well as the media that reports on it all. This though, has not halted the American people’s ability to make good and useful changes within their communities.
During the Senate confirmation hearing, According to the New York Post, Sen. Sessions made very clear his views on what he agrees and disagrees with. For example, The New York post states that Jeff Sessions insisted he did not support the recent Muslim Ban imposed by the president, Mr. Trump, he only wants more thorough background checks on those who wish to enter the United States. Mr. Sessions also stated that he, “abhors the Klan and what it represents and its hateful ideology” very much distancing himself from the Klu Klux Klan in all its entirety.
Lastly, during the confirmation hearing, Sen. Sessions was asked if he felt as though groping a woman’s genitals without her consent would be considered sexual assault, he simply replied with, “clearly, it would be”. Although Sen. Sessions has certain views not everyone agrees with, it is not going to change the fact he will be our Attorney General and a big representative voice in the fight to mold the policy of the United States.
