Technology has become a crucial part of our society these past couple decades. With this new wave of technology, a concept we call social media has surfaced. Examples of popular social media include Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, and much more. Americans spend an average of 4.7 hours a day using social media, whether it be looking through their news feed or watching YouTube videos. Now comes the question of whether or not social media is a hindrance to students when it comes to education.
According to Digital Trends, the average American spends nearly 4.7 hours on social media. An average student spends a minimum of eight hours in school, more for those who are part of after school activities or sports. Approximately 13 hours of a student’s life is taken up by both social media and academics, leaving around 11 hours for sleep and homework. The recommended sleep time is 7 to 8 hours leaving students with about 3 hours to work on studying and assignments.
BOYCP junior Rogelio Garcia stated, “social media does not impact my life as a student because I know how to limit my use of it.” While social media may be a huge distraction for some, it is up to one to determine how frequently social media is used and for what purposes. A student can use social media to share notes, resources, and guidance regarding academics.
