As November begins, the holiday season is right around the corner! Times spent with the family and full of celebrations. But ever wonder what is the purpose of celebrating a holiday such as Thanksgiving? Sure, people tend to think of things such as feasts, family reunions, football, or even parades. But, did you know that Thanksgiving was originally a simple gathering?

It all began after the arrival of the Mayflower at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620. From the 102 pilgrims that arrived, 46 of them died. With the help of the Wampanoags, a Native American tribe from the area, the pilgrims were able to survive the dreaded winter they faced. In celebration, they held a harvest which lasted three days in 1621. What many do not know is that this celebration ironically excluded Native Americans, which is why some Natives avoid celebrating the holiday. As time progresses, many are starting to unaffiliate Thanksgiving with the original meaning behind the day due to its ties with racial segregation.

The modern-day celebration of this holiday involves individuals giving thanks for whatever or whomever they wish. But with technology increasing in popularity, Thanksgiving is not so much of a family feast anymore. If you celebrate Thanksgiving, try to conversate with your family and loved ones because even though the original Thanksgiving was not much of a positive one, you yourself can give it a new meaning with those around you.
